Americans Are Buying Guns at Record Rates

This Is What Americans Are Buying As Concerns Mount.

( – The COVID-19 pandemic radically changed many industries, especially ones with home delivery options and services available over the phone and online. Another industry that experienced a major uptick in sales in 2020 is firearms, and the momentum gathered that summer has not stopped.

According to the FBI, over 1 million guns have been sold each month for the past 35 months in the United States. This number is based on the agency’s Firearm Background Checks, which are not perfect at predicting gun sales. The data includes checks for security clearances, rechecks, and permit background checks. However, not every state requires FBI background checks, meaning the actual number could still be higher.

This June, the FBI conducted 2,570,608 firearm background checks, and it processed 2,340,383 the month before. Before the pandemic, sales typically dropped in the summer as people went on vacation. This year is clearly different.

Mark Oliva of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) noted how this data is “a strong reminder of the values and freedoms for which our nation stands.” Justin Anderson, the marketing director of a major firearm store in North Carolina, said his department is mostly selling “everyday-carry handguns,” likely meaning people are increasing their self-defense abilities.

Americans are clearly exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, perhaps because they feel threatened or like danger is on their doorstep. What do you think is fueling this continued increase in gun purchases?
