(ConservativeInsider.org) – Texas is notorious for its independent spirit and state pride. While it’s traditionally known as a conservative state, it has recently swung more liberal than before. This means that former congressman and Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke may have an actual chance to be the state’s next governor. However, this would also mean stricter gun control in a state that prides itself on its Second Amendment Rights.
On Monday, November 15, O’Rourke announced he’s running for governor of Texas in the 2022 general election, likely against incumbent Governor Greg Abbott (R). However, his platform would bring about immense change from the current gun culture in the Lone Star State.
During a presidential debate in September 2019, the former Senate candidate endorsed an assault weapon buyback program where the government would “take your AR-15, your AK-47.” The following month, he backed up his first statement by saying he would send “law enforcement to recover that firearm” and ensure it wasn’t used.
House Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) pointed out the irony of O’Rourke’s Texas gubernatorial run on Twitter:
Beto O’Rourke running for Governor of Texas after openly declaring his hatred for guns is one of the silliest thing I’ve heard since…

O’Rourke is obviously using a progressive platform to try and win over Texans, but that may not be enough to succeed — particularly with citizens that hold their Second Amendment rights dear. However, with the vast migration to the state since COVID-19 began and the fact he only lost to current Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) by 2.6% in 2018 means he’s a strong candidate. This is sure to be a fascinating race.
