Biden Key Nominee to Be Removed

( – For six years, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has gone without a Senate-confirmed boss. This week, the streak continued after President Joe Biden withdrew his pick for the position after he failed to win a Senate confirmation.

On Thursday, September 9, Biden withdrew David Chipman’s nomination for director of the ATF, lamenting that he would have been “exemplary” at the position. Biden chose the former ATF agent, who’s an enormous gun-control advocate, for his tough on guns policy, hoping he could slow firearm traffickers and curb gun violence.

Senate Republicans united against Chipman, and multiple Democrats and Independents joined them. This made it impossible for the Senate to confirm him. Republicans across the board celebrated the withdrawal, including Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR):

During his presidential campaign, Biden assured his supporters he would address what he called an “epidemic” of gun violence in the nation. While most can appreciate the president’s sentiment, Conservatives are making sure Biden’s attempt to crack down on guns won’t impede on their right to keep and bear arms. While Biden will likely nominate someone else for the position soon, Americans can take a breath of fresh air for now that Chipman will not be at the helm of the ATF.
