(ConservativeInsider.org) – Parents have been dealing with their child’s ever-changing school schedule this year due to COVID-19 fears. One week their children learn from home, while the next they may be learning in-person. Sometimes, schools shut down altogether. But, it seems like many Americans may be able to agree on one thing soon enough: keeping schools open.
Dr. Anthony Fauci Wants Schools Open
On Thursday, November 19 in an interview with Chris Cuomo, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made it clear his opinion on school openings:
As Covid-19 cases continue to surge across the US, Dr. Anthony Fauci says officials should “keep the schools open.”

Interviewer Chris Cuomo subtly called out fear-mongers wanting to keep children isolated at home, claiming that our current situation is “all fear and not enough fact.”
The Facts of COVID-19 Infections in School
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) collected data from 191 countries that “shows no consistent link between reopening schools and increased rates of coronavirus infection.” If schools remain closed, UNICEF warns school-aged children could be a “lost generation.”
In our own country, the COVID-19 case percentage is actually lower in New York City schools than in the city itself. News correspondent David Begnaud shared why these schools were shut even though their own cases were so low:
NY City kids can’t go to school b/c @NYCMayor made a deal with the teachers union to close schools when test positivity in the community hit 3%. Test positivity rate in the schools is .19%. The mayor has left restaurants bars & gyms open.
Dr. Fauci said “keep the schools open.”

The White House Discourages School Closures
On Thursday, November 19, Vice President Mike Pence spoke to reporters about the administration’s support of schools opening:
The Coronavirus Task Force and the CDC do not and have never recommended school closures. pic.twitter.com/7rUotXGQ94

The current White House has long supported keeping students in school and our economy as open as possible. This allows those who need to distance themselves able to do so without restricting the freedom of those who choose not to.
So What’s Changed?
Editor Bethany Mandel shared her perspective on why more people are beginning to support schools opening:
I’m really glad the New York Times etc have joined the reopen schools party. Nothing in the data changed, unless you’re counting who got more electoral votes. Nevertheless, welcome. It’s too late for this school year, hope it was worth it.

While many lawmakers pushed for school closures over the past few months, support seems to be mounting for keeping schools open. Hopefully, as we head into the holidays and look forward to 2021, at least our children can find a sense of normalcy by heading back to school in person.
