Exercise May Be the Key to Preventing Severe COVID

(ConservativeInsider.org) – Doctors around the world have long advertised the benefits of exercise. From lowering heart attack rates and obesity to boosting mental health, getting the body moving is one of the best ways to take care of it. A new study even showed that regular exercise is one of the greatest factors in reducing the severity of a COVID-19 infection.

On Monday, January 24, University of Virginia kinesiology professors Arthur Weltman and Siddhartha Angadi spoke about recent research they did surrounding physical movement and the severity of COVID-19 infections. The researchers had been tracking the exercise habits of 48,440 adults since March 2018 to March 2020 when the pandemic hit.

By combining the exercise data with the same adults’ COVID-19 infection statistics, the professors were able to come out with a few takeaways. First, adults who were “consistently inactive” were more likely to be in the ICU and die from a COVID-19 infection than those who exercised regularly. Second, only advanced age and an organ transplant ranked higher on the list for the likelihood of having severe symptoms. This made it very clear that daily, physical exercise does lower the risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms.

The National Review shared more about this on Twitter:

While reaching 60 to 75 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 30 to 40 minutes of vigorous movement may be difficult, any amount of physical movement is better than sitting or lying around all day. Hopefully, this research gives Americans the motivation needed to take their health into their hands.
