(ConservativeInsider.org) – Our healthcare system has grown increasingly dependent on technology to keep patient records and schedule all types of procedures. This also creates a weakness. Ransomware attacks have already begun stealing data and crashing systems at some US Hospitals, and multiple government agencies warn there’s more to come.
On Wednesday, October 28, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alerted Americans to the threat:
⚠️ There is an imminent and increased cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and healthcare providers.

When hit with a ransomware attack, hospital data systems are locked up until they pay a ransom to the criminals. This threat comes when COVID-19 cases are rising in some hospitals and as flu season begins. Analysts believe the attacks come from the Russian-based gangs UNC 1878 or Wizard Spider.
Attacks have already begun in many states, shares writer Xeni Jardin:
So far, Universal Health Services, a hospital health care service company based in Pennsylvania; St. Lawrence Health Systems in New York; and the Sky Lakes Medical Center in Oregon are confirmed to have been targeted with recent ransomware attacks. https://t.co/ACllyG4JJl pic.twitter.com/RSJU2HcNCK

National security means more than just keeping our borders safe. In this technological age, attacks can happen on our soil through a variety of cybercrimes. Ensuring our healthcare systems have the resources to thwart these criminals is critical to keeping Americans safe in these times.
