ICE Accused of Allowing Excessive Procedures Targeting Women Migrants
(ConservativeInsider.org) – In the fall of 2020, a whistleblower at a Georgia detention facility alerted lawmakers to potential abuse occurring near the facility. She alleged that doctors performed hysterectomies on female immigrants held in custody, as well as other types of medical abuse and neglect. After a lengthy investigation, Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have a report.
On Tuesday, November 15, the lawmakers announced that females at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Ocilla, Georgia, were subjected to “excessive, invasive, and often unnecessary gynecological procedures” by an OB-GYN nearby. While the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility is run by LaSalle Southeast, LLC, an offsite doctor named Mahendra Amin performed most of the procedures in question.
After the hearing, I asked @SenOssoff what actions he'd like to see taken against ICE and whether the deeds of the abusive doctor were indicative of systemic problems in the agency.

While the DOJ and Georgia both sued Amin in 2013 for fraud, he continued to practice his sketchy medical procedures. Amin performed over 90% of the procedures in question, despite only having about 6% of OB-GYN visits for female detainees during the same timeframe.
The report details how doctors repeatedly did not get informed consent from patients, and ICE did have “thorough oversight” of the procedures. Now, Congress can choose whether or not to act on these abuses and find a way to better protect these women.
