(ConservativeInsider.org) – Renowned Latina civil rights champion Dolores Huerta, known for her steadfast support of Senator Robert F. Kennedy during his historic 1968 presidential bid, is now urging RFK Jr. to step away from the 2024 presidential race.
In an exclusive interview, Huerta expressed her concerns, urging RFK Jr. to “come to his senses” and warning that his candidacy could inadvertently bolster former President Donald Trump’s chances of returning to the Oval Office.
RFK Jr. has actively sought ballot access for his independent run, leveraging his uncle JFK’s iconic “Viva Kennedy!” platform to engage Latino voters. His campaign aims to highlight the enduring legacy of Kennedy’s relationship with Latinos, notably through his father’s connection with Huerta and labor leader Cesar Chavez.
However, Huerta’s stance underscores a growing rift within the Latino community. While RFK Jr. aims to rally support, Biden has garnered endorsements from several members of Chavez’s family, including his campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Chavez’s granddaughter.
RFK Jr.’s campaign has also come under criticism for the propagation of anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, particularly concerning given the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on communities of color, including Latinos.
Expressing her dismay, Huerta emphasized that while she respects RFK Jr.’s environmental advocacy, his candidacy risks undermining the integrity of Democratic elections and potentially tarnishing the storied legacy of the Kennedy family.
The rift extends beyond Huerta, with four of RFK Jr.’s siblings publicly condemning his independent bid, saying it is “dangerous to the country” and citing a misalignment of values with their father’s principles.
Despite the internal friction, RFK Jr.’s campaign remains undeterred, with his press secretary, Stefanie Spear, highlighting the growing influence of Latino voters and positioning RFK Jr. as a viable contender in the race.
The discord within the Democratic ranks harks back to Huerta’s pivotal role in RFK Sr.’s political journey. Her mobilization efforts among Mexican American and Asian American voters significantly contributed to RFK Sr.’s victory in the California Democratic presidential primary.
Huerta’s disapproval of RFK Jr.’s candidacy echoes sentiments expressed by other allies of RFK Sr., including former U.S. Senator Fred Harris, who labeled RFK Jr. as “nutty” and predicted his eventual fade from politics.
