Joe Biden Is Traveling to California to Campaign for Newsom Amid Afghanistan Crisis

( – As the east coast picks up the pieces left by Hurricane Ida and Americans continue to watch the Taliban crackdown on Afghans, many citizens look to President Joe Biden for guidance and strength. The commander-in-chief has mostly been behind the scenes lately. However, he finally decided to make another public appearance next week. Disappointingly, it’ll be to campaign for California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) rather than deal with any of the crises facing our nation and world.

On Tuesday, September 7, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that Biden will head to California “early next week.” The timing of this trip lines up perfectly with the final day for Californians to turn in their ballots for the recall election that could potentially boot Newsom out of office. Biden’s visit closely follows that of Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to the state, who both shared their support for the Democrat governor.

Many Americans find it odd that Biden is choosing to fly Air Force One on a politically motivated trip when our nation faces so many problems, from coronavirus and immigration to a struggling economy. Turning Point USA’s chief creative officer Benny Johnson shared his opinion on Twitter:

Biden likely understands that if California falls to a Republican Governor through a successful recall election, it may be more difficult to win back the state in 2024. However, with everything our nation faces, a political campaign trip may not be the best decision for him to make right now.
