Nancy Pelosi Blocks Top Republicans From Serving

( – No one quite understood what was happening and who exactly was inside when rioters entered the US Capitol on January 6. However, after thorough investigations by multiple federal agencies and independent journalists, Americans have been able to piece together the story of that day. But, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has still pushed for a House committee to investigate the event. However, she just blocked GOP lawmakers from serving on the panel.

Pelosi Rejects Two Republicans From Joining the Select Committee

On Wednesday, July 21, Pelosi told Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) she would not allow Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) or Jim Banks (R-IN) to serve on the bipartisan committee, and asked him to appoint two others instead. Pelosi declared it was out of “respect for the integrity of the investigation,” but McCarthy did not accept that as a real answer.

McCarthy had also nominated Reps. Rodney Davis (R-IL), Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) and Troy Nehls (R-TX). Instead of having them serve, he decided to pull all five Republicans from working with the Committee. In a press conference the same day, he emphasized that the GOP “will run our own investigation.”

Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) was appointed by Pelosi and will remain on the panel at this time. She’s known to be a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump and asserted that “this investigation must go forward.”

Is There Any Chance of a Bipartisan Committee?

By rejecting two members for the committee, Pelosi destroyed any hopes of a partnership while investigating the events of January 6. This stunt showed Pelosi’s true purpose of the committee, to push her own agenda rather than an unbiased, impartial probe.

McCarthy did tell reporters he would allow Republican lawmakers to serve on the committee if Pelosi allows Banks and Jordan to stay on the panel. He highlighted how Pelosi has directly attacked the minority party’s choices through this move, which he called an “unprecedented step.” He went on to ask House Democrats why they were, “allowing a lame-duck speaker to destroy this institution?”

Democrats Move Forward With Hearings

Even if Cheney is the only Republican who will attend, Democrats are still planning to hold their first hearing on Tuesday, July 27. This first meeting will center on law enforcement and their experience that day.

While Americans may have guessed Pelosi’s committee would end up completely one-sided, it’s still disappointing to see the House Speaker completely destroy the hopes of a bipartisan investigation. Perhaps, one day, she will put her country and democracy ahead of her own agenda.
