Pete Buttigieg Finally Urges Canada to Open the Border

( – For two weeks, truckers in Canada have been in the capital of Ottawa protesting the government’s far-reaching COVID-19 mandates. The protests are now spreading and impacting the United States. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is now getting involved — but some wonder why it took him so long.

The Ambassador Bridge in Detroit is one of the busiest border crossings between Canada and the US. Truckers showed how serious they are about the mandates that are threatening their liberties by blocking the border crossing on February 7. On Thursday, four days into the blockade, Buttigieg finally remembered the main point of his job is to keep traffic running smoothly in America and decided he should do something about it. Apparently, it took that many days for him to define the big word “transportation” in his job title.

According to a White House official, Buttigieg and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urged the Canadian government to “use federal powers to resolve the situation at [the] joint border.” The official went on to say US and Canadian border officials are trying to find alternate land, air, and sea routes. The border blockade is now threatening production at US auto plants.

Canadian authorities could end the blockade at any moment by rescinding the COVID-19 restrictions that have been making truckers’ jobs so difficult throughout the pandemic. Instead of working with its people, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is digging its heels in, and that failed strategy is now causing problems in the US.

Perhaps instead of weak statements, Buttigieg and President Joe Biden’s administration should show the Canadians that Americans value freedom above all else and throw their weight behind the truckers. Of course, to do that, the current administration would actually have to practice what it preaches, and freedom is certainly not something Biden and his ilk seem to care about.
