Republicans No Longer Trust Science Like They Used To

( – Science and technology have allowed people in every nation to live healthier and more fulfilling lives as they understand more about how the world works. However, over time, researchers have sometimes proven things false that were once considered fact by the scientific community. Now, a new poll shows that some Americans no longer trust science like they used to.

NORC Poll Finds Lack of Confidence in Scientific Community

On Wednesday, January 26, The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released data from its 2021 General Social Survey detailing Americans’ feelings towards various scientific institutions in the US. According to the results, only 48% of Americans have “a great deal of confidence” in these institutions, and there is a clear difference along party lines.

The survey, conducted from December 1, 2020 through May 3, 2021 with 4,032 participants, showed 64% of Democrats were confident in scientific institutions, whereas only 34% of Republicans felt the same way. This gap grew by nine points over the past three years. The survey has a 2% margin of error and 95% confidence level. The AP-NORC Center shared a graph of same question since 2000:

Science Versus Medicine: Analyzing the Gap

According to the survey, the doubt Republicans have in the scientific community is also reflected in medicine. Overall, the results show that only 38% of Americans have “a great deal of confidence” in medicine this year, with Democrats polling at 45% and Republicans coming in at 34%.

As citizens unpack this data, it is important to highlight that the poll doesn’t differentiate between the scientific community and scientific agencies like the CDC, FDA, and WHO, which have all come under scrutiny in recent months for their flip-flopping policies. With this, there may be less confidence in scientific communities controlled by the government and the likely politicizing of science that has occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey also detailed how Americans are also losing overall confidence in organized religion, education, and the press.

Science Is an Objective Field

Researchers build scientific experiments and studies to prove facts, and yet it seems that Democrats have revised policies over the past year, such as masking and vaccine efficacy, to meet their changing political needs. By trying to use science as reasoning for their constantly rotating policies, the current administration could be leading to the current lack of trust Republicans have in “science.”
