World Leaders Wait to Congratulate Presidential Winner Until All Votes Counted

( – Many media outlets project Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to be the winner of the 2020 election, but President Donald Trump is questioning the legitimacy of the ballot count in multiple states. As the world awaits official results, some world leaders, including Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, are waiting to congratulate the winner.

A Putin spokesperson had this do say on the Russian leaders silence this time after being quick to congratulate President Trump four years ago, “Obviously, you can see that certain legal procedures are coming there, which were announced by the incumbent president — therefore this situation is different, so we consider it correct to wait for the official announcement,”

On Saturday, November 7, Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated his country will “wait until all the legal matters have been resolved” to applaud the next president-elect. Obrador himself brought up questions of fraud in 2008 and 2012, the first 2 times he ran for president. In 2018, he finally won.

Obrador stated this was a “politically prudent” move, likely to keep a good relationship between his country and President Donald Trump, as Mexico shares a nearly 2,000-mile border with the US.

Journalist Borzou Daragahi compiled other world leaders who have also withheld from comments on the election:

As Americans watch the various lawsuits work their way through the courts, we must be patient as our legislators ensure a free and fair election. Thankfully, other world leaders are choosing to wait as well.
