Homeland Security now says Iran tried to sneak terrorist-linked operatives into America under the cover of its World Cup soccer delegation.
Story Snapshot
- DHS says Iran tried to slip Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps operatives into the U.S. as “World Cup staff.”
- Only 53 of roughly 120 proposed Iranian delegation members were approved after vetting exposed IRGC ties.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned months ago that Iran would try to embed non-sports IRGC-linked figures in the team.
- Iranian soccer has long, documented links to the Revolutionary Guard, turning sports into a tool of regime control.
DHS: Iran Tried to Use the World Cup as a Back Door Into America
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin says Iran tried to use the 2026 World Cup to sneak people with “direct ties” to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps into the United States by hiding them inside its official delegation.[1] He told Fox News that most national teams travel with about 120 people, but that the United States only approved 53 members of Iran’s group, after vetting showed that many of the extra names had direct links to the Revolutionary Guard and were not normal soccer staff.[1][2]
Mullin also described a recent case where a man claiming to be the president of Iran’s soccer federation tried to board a flight with the team but was stopped when checks showed he had direct connections to the Revolutionary Guard.[4] That man was not allowed to get on the plane, and Mullin used the example to warn that the Iranian regime is trying to “play games” with security and cannot be trusted when it comes to who they send to U.S. soil.[4]
Rubio’s Earlier Warnings and the Trump Administration’s Red Line
Months before Mullin’s revelations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the United States would welcome Iran’s players and real support staff, but would not allow anyone “clearly not related to sports” who had links to the Revolutionary Guard to embed in the delegation.[1] Rubio said the State Department would monitor Iran’s list very closely so the World Cup could not be used as cover for terrorists to enter the country pretending to be trainers, journalists, or extra officials.[2][3]
A State Department spokesperson later stressed that the visas needed for Iran to compete—players and necessary staff—had been issued, but that the U.S. would not let the Iranian team “abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.”[3] Some applicants tied to the group were rejected after officials concluded they were seeking visas under false pretenses, showing that American screening was not just talk but active enforcement of the red line Rubio had laid down.[3]
Iran Cries ‘Discrimination’ While Soccer Is Entangled With the Revolutionary Guard
Iran’s soccer authorities and players have pushed back by accusing the United States of discrimination and creating “tension” around the tournament, after at least 14 staff were denied visas to enter America from their base in Mexico.[3][13] Iranian officials have complained to the global soccer body about travel limits and say the United States is not providing “equal conditions” to their team, trying to cast security checks as political pressure instead of a basic duty to protect fans and citizens.[11][13]
Those claims ring hollow when set against years of evidence that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has sunk deep roots into Iranian sports. A report shared with Western media alleges that at least 15 Revolutionary Guard commanders or security-linked figures have held senior roles in top clubs and federations, and that stadiums and clubs have been used to spy on citizens and crush dissent.[6][19] Analysts say the Guard sees sports as a tool of social control, not just a game, and tightly monitors athletes to enforce loyalty to the regime.[19][24]
Why This Matters for U.S. Security and Sovereignty
Security experts have also documented how Iranian intelligence and Revolutionary Guard leaders increasingly use foreign networks and cut‑outs to run plots overseas, sometimes relying on criminal gangs to mask Tehran’s hand.[23] That pattern—using nontraditional covers and front roles—fits with Rubio’s warning that Iran might send people who pose as journalists, trainers, or extra staff to slip dangerous operatives into host countries during major events like the World Cup.[14][21] When that tactic reaches America’s borders, the price of a mistake could be lives lost on U.S. soil.

For many conservative Americans, this episode is a sharp reminder that the United States cannot afford to treat mass travel around global events as harmless tourism. The Trump administration’s firm stance—denying entry to anyone with Revolutionary Guard ties, tightening screening, and limiting Iran’s delegation to those truly needed for competition—shows how serious vetting and strong borders work together.[5][22] Sports may be about unity on the field, but off the field, it is national security and common sense that must win.
