(ConservativeInsider.org) – Traffic stops are one of the most dangerous tasks of any law enforcement officer. When they pull a motorist over, they have no idea what that person is going to do. Do they have a warrant for their arrest for a violent crime? Are they speeding away from the scene of a crime? Do they have a vendetta against cops?
These stressful traffic stops can be worse if a motorist has a concealed carry permit — not because the driver is doing anything wrong, but because a weapon has now been introduced into the situation. Even when you’re within your rights to carry a gun, there are steps you should take if you get stopped.
What to Do If You’re Stopped
If you are pulled over by the police while carrying your firearm, it’s okay. If you’re legally allowed to have it, don’t panic. Follow these steps:
- Keep your hands visible. We suggest placing the in the 11 and 2 positions on your steering wheel so the officer can see where they’re at.
- Tell the officer that you have a concealed weapons permit and you are carrying.
- Let the cop know where the firearm is, but do not reach for it.
- Cooperate fully as the officer asks questions.
It’s most important that you remain calm throughout the interaction. If you’re jumpy or irritable, it could put the police officer on edge. You also never, ever want to make sudden movements during a traffic stop while you’re carrying. The last thing you want to do is make the cop think you’re a threat, especially when you have your weapon on you.
Cooperation is key. As long as you follow the officer’s instructions and remain calm, everything will be fine. You both can go about your day no worse for wear.
