(ConservativeInsider.org) – Al Franken, who made a name for himself on popular late night sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” before being elected as a Senator in Minnesota, has found a way to synthesize both roles: by acting as a Senator in an upcoming Netflix series.
Though Franken was born in New York City, he moved to Minnesota with his family when he was four years old. He attended Harvard University, obtaining a degree in political science. He was hired as one of the original writers for SNL in its first season in 1975, staying on for five years. He left for five years but returned in 1985 and remained on staff for a decade. After he left SNL in 1995, he wrote movies and books, several of which made the New York Times Best Seller list. In 2008, he announced his candidacy for Senator from Minnesota. Franken won the election by fewer than 500 votes. Franken served in the Senate for nearly a decade, before multiple allegations of misconduct during the height of the “Me Too” movement led him to resign in 2017.
The show Franken will be starring in is called “The Residence,” based on a 2015 book of the same name by Kate Anderson Brower. The show is being produced by Shonda Rhimes and Besty Beers and has been described as a “comedic whodunit” about a state dinner that goes awry. Though production began in January of this year, it is unlikely that the show will air until 2025.
Franken joins Uzo Aduba, who gained fame as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” and who will be playing a police detective, as well as Giancarlo Esposito, who famously played crime lord Gus Fring in the AMC series “Breaking Bad.” Esposito will be playing the chief usher in the White House, replacing “Brooklyn 99” star Andrew Braugher in the role, who died of lung cancer in December 2023.
