More Illegal Migrants to Receive Obamacare Under New Rule

(ConservativeInsider.org) – More than 100,000 immigrants who entered the United States illegally as minors will be eligible for health insurance under Obamacare from next year, according to a new directive from the Biden administration.

These children, who are commonly known as “Dreamers,” are living in the US due to the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive order issued by former President Barack Obama, which also prevents their deportation.

The new rule will start enrolling these immigrants into the Affordable Care Act (ACA) just days before the 2024 presidential elections and is likely to boost Biden’s popularity among Latino voters, who constitute the majority of these Dreamers. However, it has also attracted criticism from Republicans, who view it as an overt attempt to influence the presidential elections.

Although these immigrants have been living in the US for over a decade, they were not eligible for government-funded healthcare insurance schemes, as they are not legal US citizens. Now, the Department of Health and Human Services has finalized rules that would allow these Dreamers to access healthcare coverage under the ACA, also known as Obamacare.

While talking about this measure, President Biden acknowledged Dreamers’ contribution to America and promised to bring notable changes to the healthcare system to improve their status. Biden also suggested that he wants Dreamers to become permanent citizens of the United States and urged Congress to take necessary steps to incorporate these people into the mainstream.

Vice President Kamala Harris also asked Congress to give permanent protections to these illegal immigrants.

When Donald Trump tried to end DACA, his efforts were blocked by the Supreme Court in 2020. However, further admissions are blocked in DACA, as a federal court has already ruled that the Obama administration had no authority to start the program in the first place.

Almost 580,000 DACA Dreamers are currently living in the United States. The administration has predicted that nearly 100,000 of them will enroll in the new program.
