(ConservativeInsider.org) – The famous fact-checking website Snopes, which has been accused of a left-leaning bias for many years now, published a piece on Saturday, June 22 about the allegation that Trump called white supremacists and neo-Nazis “very fine people,” rating the claim as “false.”
The allegation stems from a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017 that was meant to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, a general for the Confederate army. The protest was organized by Richard Spencer and Jason Kessler, who are both white nationalists, and prominent white nationalists, including David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, were in attendance.
The controversial protest drew counter-protestors, leading to hundreds of people gathering in Charlottesville. The event devolved into chaos and violence, leading to the deaths of three people and dozens of injuries after a self-described white supremacist drove his car into the crowd.
Joe Biden, who has always had a tenuous relationship with the truth, has repeatedly used this false anecdote to disparage his rival, former President Donald Trump, going so far as to say the comment was what motivated him to run against Trump. In fact, the announcement video for Biden’s 2020 presidential run began with the words “Charlottesville, Virginia,” claiming that as president, Trump declared people who spread hatred as morally equal to those who have the “courage to stand against” hatred. He went so far as to call it the greatest threat the nation had ever seen, which is an interesting remark for someone born before the end of the Second World War.
However, as Snopes noted almost seven years after it occurred, in the speech Trump gave that the “very fine people” quote came from, Trump explicitly stated that white nationalists and neo-Nazis should be “condemned totally,” before explaining that the people in attendance who were not white nationalists had been treated unfairly by the media, as they were legally protesting.
