Starlink’s High-Speed WiFi Takes Flight
Qatar Airways has implemented Starlink’s satellite internet on its fleet, enhancing its inflight WiFi capabilities significantly. The first flight equipped with this technology departed from Doha to London Heathrow using a Boeing 777, offering onboard internet speeds up to 215 Mbps, faster than most home broadband connections.
This technological leap, which allows free access for passengers, contrasts sharply with the airline’s previous service that charged for lower speeds. The development promises a smoother passenger experience, particularly benefiting business travelers who rely on uninterrupted connectivity.

Collaboration with SpaceX
During the groundbreaking initiative’s test flight, Elon Musk participated in a video call with Qatar Airways CEO, demonstrating the service’s capabilities. Musk commented, “We’re literally just talking over Starlink right now – that’s super cool.”
Qatar Airways plans to extend Starlink throughout its entire fleet by 2025, initially equipping 12 Boeing 777-300s with the service. The airline aims to deliver reliable internet that can accommodate video calls, streaming services, and even online gaming.
Setting a New Standard
Qatar Airways is the first airline in the Middle East and North Africa to introduce Starlink onboard, joining Hawaiian Airlines as early adopters, with United Airlines and Air France set to follow. This move underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to its strategic overhaul and enhancing in-flight experiences.
“By providing Starlink reliable, seamless internet on board, we are connecting people to things they love the most even at 35,000 feet, making every journey with us a memorable one,” said Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.
The global passenger demand is rising, with the launch aligning well with increased travel needs. With Starlink, Qatar Airways positions itself at the forefront of technological advancements in aviation connectivity, promising to improve with the launch of new satellites and software updates.
