(ConservativeInsider.org) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at the NATO summit in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, July 9 to thank the United States for their support of his country’s war against Russia and suggested that NATO hold another Peace Summit before the presidential election in November.
More than 100 countries participated in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held at the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland from June 15-16 of this year. Russia did not attend but instead held their own summit in Pyongyang, North Korea with Kim Jong Un. China did not attend the Summit in protest of Russia’s lack of inclusion. This led to a condemnation from NATO allies, who called the People’s Republic of China a “decisive enabler” of Russia in this war.
People who spoke to Zelensky after his speech stated that the Ukrainian leader suggested that he would like to hold another peace summit should include Russia with the hopes of finding a peaceful conclusion to the war that has been raging within his country for over two years now.
Following these reports, Russia’s deputy foreign minister stated that their country would not attend any such peace summits because they consider Ukraine’s conditions for their attendance an “ultimatum.” A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said there was “no precise substance” about a second summit, but added that Putin is “always open to dialogue.”
Some U.S. officials who declined to speak on the record said they were “unconvinced” that another peace summit would happen before November and did not believe Russia would attend even if it did happen. However, Thomas Pickering, who previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine that there is still potential for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and these kinds of statements are “normal” before both parties agree to negotiate for peace.
In his speech, Zelensky said there will be no security in the world “without America,” thanking the United States for their ongoing support of his nation.
