(ConservativeInsider.org) – Kentucky Representative James Comer, who is the Chair of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, suggested that President Joe Biden is similar to former President Richard Nixon, who famously resigned following the Watergate scandal.
Comer made the comparison in reference to how Biden has handled the audio recordings of his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur back in October 2023. Biden was interviewed by Hur last year following Biden’s admission that he retained classified documents from his time as Vice President to Barack Obama. Ultimately, Hur opted not to indict the president and concluded that Biden was a “well-meaning” old man with a poor memory, a description that rankled the President.
Though Hur released a transcript of the interview he did with Biden, Republicans have attempted to obtain the actual audio recordings of the interview. However, under the advice of Attorney General Merrick Garland, Biden invoked executive privilege to block the release of the tapes.
In response to the invocation of executive privilege, Comer stated that there is “no difference” between Biden and Nixon’s attempts to hide audio recordings that would be politically damaging to them. Comer asserted that the audio should be able to be obtained via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request but said he believes the White House is stalling until November in the hope that Democrats will flip the House and gain control of the House Oversight Committee.
Comer added that the reason why Biden is refusing to release the audio recordings is because it would “reaffirm” that Biden’s age is affecting his memory, suggesting the President’s mental state is “in decline.” He also stated that the transcript of the President’s interview with Hur is likely to be inaccurate, as people within several government departments, including the FBI, IRS, and the DOJ have not been honest or forthright with the House Oversight Committee over the course of their investigation into the President. Comer asked the Biden administration to be “transparent” the way they had suggested they would be during Biden’s campaign in the 2020 election.
