One Killed After Grenades Explode at Local Government Meeting

( – On Friday, December 15th in the small Ukrainian village of Keretsky, a local politician walked into a heated village council meeting and dropped three grenades. The explosions injured 26 people in the room, with some still in critical condition. There has been one confirmed casualty so far.

The meeting was being livestreamed online, and police shared footage of the incident on social media after it occurred. About an hour and a half into a heated council meeting, a man dressed in black walked into the room and listened for a moment, before leaving the room with another man. A few minutes later he returned, standing in front of the doorway before attempting to get the attention of everyone in the room. At that point, he pulled three grenades out of his pocket, pulled the safety pins, and threw them to the center of the room. The shocked council members at the meeting screamed and ducked for cover as the grenades detonated, filling the room with smoke.

The perpetrator is allegedly Serhii Batryn, a member of the Servant of the People Party, which is headed by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian Secret Service said they are investigating it as an act of terrorism, as well as charging Batryn with illegal use of weapons. Initial reports indicated that Batryn died in the blasts, but police later said he was at the hospital in critical condition.

Though police have not shared a motive for the attack yet, there are reports from local media that Batryn was in a longstanding feud with Mikhail Mushka, the chief of their village. Allegedly, Batryn was upset with a proposal to give Mushka a 50% raise and a bonus because he was dissatisfied with Mushka’s performance as village chief.

Local authorities are investigating whether the attack was related to the war with Russia. Though it may be unrelated, Batryn was likely able to obtain the grenades due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
