‘Squad’ Member Cori Bush Probed By DOJ

(ConservativeInsider.org) – The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Democratic Representative Cori Bush for allegedly misusing campaign funds related to her personal security, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The probe arises from concerns surrounding the use of federal security money, with lingering questions about whether the funds were appropriately directed.

The investigation surfaced after the DOJ served a grand jury subpoena to House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday, January 29. The DOJ issued the subpoena, requesting documents related to the matter. While initial speculation pointed to potential ties to the January 6th Capitol attack, sources later clarified the focus on Rep. Bush.

Rep. Bush, a prominent member of the progressive “Squad” faction in Congress, has faced scrutiny for her spending on personal security, especially considering her public support for the “defund the police” movement. Public records reveal that she has spent over $500,000 on private security services.

Adding to the controversy, Rep. Bush’s husband, Cortney Merritts, has received substantial financial compensation from her campaign. Merritts, who joined her campaign payroll in January 2022 as a security guard, has reportedly pocketed over $100,000 since then. The nature of these payments has evolved over time, initially labeled as “security” before changing to “wage expenses” in April 2023.

Further complicating matters, Rep. Bush faced two separate complaints filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in March 2023 regarding her security spending. One complaint, filed by the Committee, alleges violations of campaign finance laws due to the $60,000 payment to Merritts in 2022 for security services, despite his lack of a security license in her district.

The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) also filed a complaint questioning whether Rep. Bush used campaign funds for personal gain, specifically citing the $60,000 payment to Merritts. FACT raised concerns about the potential for inflated payments or unnecessary services due to their personal relationship.

Rep. Bush has denied any wrongdoing and insists she has complied with all applicable laws and regulations. She claimed to have used campaign funds for legitimate security services and emphasized that no federal tax dollars were involved. She further attributed the investigations to “right-wing organizations” aiming to discredit her.
