Texas’ Paxton On Trump’s AG Pick Shortlist

(ConservativeInsider.org) – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is likely to lead the Department of Justice should former President Donald Trump win the 2024 presidential election.

While speaking at the National Rifle Association convention in Dallas, Trump praised Paxton and called him a “very talented” guy.

According to Trump, many people want to serve at the helm of the Justice Department under him, adding that he would consider Paxton for this role as he has impressed him while working as the state AG.

Both Trump and Paxton have been backing each other in their legal troubles.

The Texas AG was even seen supporting Trump in New York, where he is facing a criminal trial for hush money payments to silence the adult film star Stormy Daniels.

On the other hand, Trump has suggested that he helped Paxton in his legal tussles when he was unfairly treated by some people.

Trump took credit for saving Paxton from a possible jail term, claiming that the bribery and corruption charges against the top Texas lawyer were politically driven.

In 2023, 60 Republican lawmakers from the Texas House of Representatives joined state Democrats to impeach Paxton, who was later acquitted by the state Senate.

He was accused of abusing his power to target the enemies of his chief political donor and a Texas real estate tycoon Nate Paul, a charge that Paxton vehemently denied.

Later, he teamed up with Texas Governor Greg Abbott to unseat the GOP lawmakers, through various means, who switched the party lines during his impeachment vote.

Texas House Republican Speaker Dade Phelan led the GOP rebels in this impeachment and also faced backlash from Paxton, who supported his MAGA-rival David Covey in the state primaries. Phelan was likely to win this race easily, but it will now be decided by a May 28 runoff election.

Paxton also backed Trump’s election fraud claims in 2020 and contested the results of the key battleground states in the Supreme Court, which eventually dismissed the case.
